As engineering continues to evolve, so do the perspectives and approaches of the engineers of tomorrow. Today, we’re witnessing a significant shift where young minds are actively engaging in problem-solving and embracing innovative solutions around developing sustainable cities. At LJA, we have a strong cohort of young professionals who are passionate about giving back and mentoring the next generation of engineers, helping them learn about the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry.

What is Future City?

Future City is an inspiring extracurricular program dedicated to introducing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) concepts to middle school students across the nation. With a participation of over 45,000 students, this initiative provides a dynamic platform for students to delve into the world of engineering. It enables them to tackle global sustainability challenges, fostering their creativity and problem-solving skills. Future City is a transformative journey that empowers students to envision and create a better world for future generations.

LJA’s Involvement

Olivia Yates, one of our esteemed Graduate Engineers, who embarked on a remarkable journey mentoring students from a middle school in Knoxville, Tennessee, for the Future City competition. Over a span of 4 months, Olivia not only imparted knowledge about STEM programs but also served as a guide, mentoring students on sustainable practices concerning natural resources. She worked hand in hand with the students, simplifying technical information and ensuring they comprehended the intricacies of the engineering process.

The project focused on revitalizing Derna, a 700-year-old city in Libya plagued by natural disasters and infrastructure challenges. Olivia mentored the students on sustainable and renewable energy sources, aiming to improve the quality of life for residents of Derna. Together, they explored concepts such as city infrastructure, resource extraction, and waste management, devising innovative solutions to address these pressing issues.

Reflecting on her experience, Olivia shares, “It was incredibly rewarding to witness the enthusiasm and motivation of these young minds as they delved into the realms of project management and sustainable water resource practices.”

The Impact

Olivia’s dedication bore fruit as her group clinched 1st place in Tennessee and ranked an impressive 8th place nationally! The impact of her involvement with the group was profound, igniting a spark within the students who are already gearing up for next year’s competition. Such initiatives highlight the pivotal role of engineering involvement and student outreach in nurturing the interest of today’s youth in the AEC industry.
